The province’s lakes and rivers have good water quality according to a 36-page report called, The State of Water Quality in New Brunswick’s Lakes and Rivers: Water Quality Monitoring Results 2003-2016
The Department of Local Government and Environment says work has continued for more than 30 years to improve regulations, water surface management and there has been increased stewardship as well.
There are emerging concerns, many of which have made the news, including microplastics, toxic algal blooms and pharmaceuticals and personal care products and flame retardants making their way into watersheds.
Invasive species of plants and animals are also mentioned including the Small Mouth Bass, a very aggressive fish species that is a threat to the Atlantic Salmon.
The report also says the government will continue to work with First Nations and watershed and lake associations to ensure monitoring of our waters continues.
