20-K Sock Day is an initiative that launched last year by a group called We Be Us, with a goal of collecting 20 thousand pairs of socks across Canada.
They met that goal so this year they’re aiming for 50 thousand.
Dwayne Hayes of Fredericton says he got involved after his brother Mike collected over 4 thousand pairs in Moncton last year.
“Our goal is to collect 20 thousand pairs of socks in Atlantic Canada,” he says.
Hayes says while there are a number of great organizations that collect clothing for the less fortunate, there is never enough socks.
He hopes to beat his brother with a bit of friendly sibling rivalry and collect over 5 thousand pairs of warm socks in the Fredericton area.
“A lot of it has to do with targeting a number of corporations. We’re hoping to create some corporate competition between different companies and industries as well as approaching schools to see if they’re interested in doing collections. We’re also trying to organize something with Junior A teams in the Fredericton area,” Hayes says.
Socks will be distributed to homeless shelters in the communities in which they were collected.
In Moncton, you’ll find a drop-off location at DNA Swag and donations are being accepted from now until February 19th.
