The auditor general questioned the Department of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour in her annual report Tuesday morning.
Kim MacPherson says their audit identified a lack of monitoring. This was the case for an agreement intended to expand nursing programs at UNB and UdeM.
“So overall, we found the department was monitoring the enrollment associated with the program, and aware the targets weren’t being met, but they made no changes to the program,” MacPherson said.
MacPherson says they should have identified the reasons of why it was not reaching its target and made changes or cancelled the program.
She says the annual audit found, the province had invested close to $100 million over 14 years, yet the number of seats in the programs at the time the agreement expired was less than it was in 2005-06, the first year of the agreement.
“Essentially, Universite de Moncton never met the targeted number of seats for the bachelor program. The University of New Brunswick did meet the target for several years, until 2013-14, when the number of seats began to decrease,” MacPherson said.
