The light display in uptown Saint John has new features making the holidays extra festive this year.
One new feature is the ‘tree wrapping’ initiative with two brilliantly lit trees on King Street that will remain shining all year round. Uptown Saint John hopes to expand this to include more trees.
Jessica Delong of Saint John Energy says after an audit of the light inventory, they figured out they needed to get some new ones.
“Uptown Saint John and Saint John Energy worked together on finding some new lights. That’s when [we found] the shooting snowflakes going up King street. They were the first purchase,” Delong said.
The King’s Square bandstand also has a new addition: lights in the shape of a family of carolers on the second level.
Delong says there are approximately 500 lights in the uptown core and on the west side, which are all LED.
“They barely pull any power. It’s very energy-efficient to have those up,” Delong said.
Delong says the purchase and installation of the lights is a long-time partnership between the utility and Uptown Saint John which everyone seems to enjoy.
“I think everybody is just excited, it gets you in the Christmas spirit. When I’m going up King Street [seeing] the snowflakes and bells it just starts that festive Christmas season,” Delong said.
New this year is the Irving Oil home office on King Square Square, which is also looking festive. Delong says as the uptown grows, so will the program.
The lights generally go up in time for the Santa Claus parade come down by the second week of January.
