Based on the events of Esquire article “Can You Say…Hero?,” by Tom Junod, Marielle Heller’s (The Diary of a Teenage Girl), A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood lovingly recreates the comfort and magic of PBS’ Mr. Rogers Neighbourhood while spotlighting how and why Fred Rogers and his philosophy of kindness touched so many lives.
In 1998 award-winning journalist Lloyd Vogel, (Matthew Rhys, The Americans) is assigned by Esquire to profile the beloved television icon Fred Rogers (Tom Hanks). Over the course of interviewing Mr. Rogers and observing his empathetic, genuine connections with people and work on set, the two men become friends as Lloyd begins to face his anger towards his estranged father, (Chris Cooper, Adaptation) and his own worries of being a new father.
A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood reminds us of the power of human connection, compassion and empathy, anchored by Hanks’ savvy casting and performance, at a time when we need these qualities most of all.
A Beautiful Day in The Neighbourhood is in theatres now.
