Students, staff and the general public are welcome to attend a ceremony at UNB Saint John marking the 30th anniversary of the Montreal massacre.
On December 6th, 1989, Marc Lepine murdered 14 women at École Polytechnique.
Lauren Lavric is part of the organizing committee for the memorial service on the Tucker Park campus.
She says it will include people speaking about different types of gender-based violence including how it impacts the indigenous community.
“I believe we have Jennifer MacKenzie coming in to talk about violence and discrimination in engineering and people talking about in academic situations, ” Lavric said in an interview on Thursday afternoon.
She studied the tragedy during a high school sociology class where they watched a film about it.
“I grew up hearing about it because my mother worked in a non-traditional role as a welding inspector and my older sister is in engineering. It was kind of something my mother made sure we knew about and we recognized it every year,” Lavric said.
After the speeches, 14 roses will be laid in memory of the victims.
The ceremony begins at 12:30 p.m. on Friday afternoon in Room 104 at Oland Hall.
In Fredericton, a candlelight memorial to commemorate the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women will be held at 8 a.m. Friday morning.
