The Imperial Theatre is inviting movie goers to close out 2019 with a screening of a modern holiday favourite, a child’s dream come true, and parent’s worst nightmare, Home Alone (1990).
“Home Alone has pre-sold more tickets, 400-plus, than any Retro Film in our history and we are so stoked!” said Imperial Theatre Executive Assistant Director, Bethany Stout.
In Chris Columbus’ holiday film, precocious and rambunctious eight-year old Kevin McAllister, (Macaulay Culkin) is accidentally left behind by his family in the crazy hubbub preparing for a Christmas family vacation in Paris.
While Kevin has the time of his life being on his own, a string of burglaries is sweeping the Chicago suburb, orchestrated by criminal duo Harry and Marv (Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern).
The two crooks set their sights on the McAllister house, thinking it is the latest empty house during the holiday season. However, once Kevin learns of their plan, he prepares to defend his home and give the burglars a taste of their own medicine.
The film was a humongous critical and box office smash, making $285,781,230 million USD domestically ($562,658, 858 USD in 2019) in an age where superheroes had not yet made the leap to the silver screen. It minted Culkin as the “it” child star of Hollywood and birthed a franchise whose entries greatly paled in comparison to the first film.
“Home Alone was the choice of Kathleen from our marketing team and she is never going to let us forget what a brilliant choice it was,” added Stout.
Home Alone is truly a lightning-in-a-bottle, cozy Christmas film that is suited for the entire family, from Great-Grandma Bertha to the antsy, sugar-manic tiny tots eagerly awaiting Santa Claus.
If you go: Home Alone is screening at the Imperial Theatre Monday, December 9, 2019. Tickets are $10 with showtime at 7:00 pm.
