It is still unknown when dozens of tenants from two Saint John apartment buildings will be able to return home.
High winds caused roof damage to a 78-unit building on Heather Way and a 12-unit building on Ocean Court early Tuesday.
No one was injured but more than 100 tenants were forced to evacuate in the middle of the night.
Dan Bedell, a spokesperson with the Canadian Red Cross, said they continue to provide hotel lodging and meals for 55 people from the Heather Way building through at least Saturday.
“By which time we hope the building owners can provide an update on repairs and if/when tenants can return home,” said Bedell in an email.
At least 26 other people living in the building made their own arrangements, he said.
Bedell said they are also helping 15 people from the Ocean Court building at least through Friday, when they hope to get an update from the landlord on repairs and efforts to find vacant units in other buildings.
Saint John EMO was partially activated during the evacuation but was deactivated by late Tuesday morning, according to Lori Lambert, a spokesperson for the city.
Lambert said the property owners have engaged roofers, clean-up contractors and electricians.
“Once the building is secure, dried out and the electricity back on (the Provincial Electrical Inspector would be consulted), Fire Prevention Officers will return to perform an inspection,” said Lambert in an email.
“The Fire Prevention Division is available to the property owners if any further support is needed.”
Displaced tenants who have not registered with the Red Cross are still encouraged to do so by calling 1-800-222-9597, she said.
