If you live on Campobello Island, you have likely noticed your mail from Canada Post appears to have been tampered with.
According to New Brunswick Southwest MP John Williamson, it has been, but not by the Crown corporation.
“It has been almost the entire year that U.S. Customs has begun to go through mail to search it, to inspect it everything from packages to Christmas cards to medical records, this is a real problem,” said Williamson.
Williamson says he has approached the Trudeau government about the situation.
“I have brought it up to the foreign affairs minister to bring him up to speed on it, I have raised this in the House of Commons as well, the response frankly from my colleagues in the House was positive because most of them were surprised this could even be happening,” said Williamson.
“This also is something that presses on Canadian Sovereignty and we want to get it sorted out and we get back to a system where laws in both counties are respected but the mail is not molested as it crosses the border.”
If the roles were reversed and the Canada Border Services Agency was rifling through American-bound mail, Williamson says it would create an uproar across the United States.
