J.J. Abrams returns to helm the final entry in the Star Wars sequel trilogy which also concludes the Skywalker saga.
The franchise has never had trouble gathering a new generation fans, with characters introduced in the latest trilogy, from Finn to BB-8 resonating with the current generation as much as Han, R2-D2 and Chewbacca did 40-plus years ago.
Set one year after the events of The Last Jedi, Rey, (Daisy Ridley) Finn, (John Boyega) and Poe Dameron, (Oscar Isaac), and the remaining Resistance prepare to face off against the First Order, and its new Supreme Leader, Kylo Ren (Adam Driver).
Despite the arrival of new characters, (Naomi Ackie, Richard E. Grant and Keri Russell) and some old faces, (Anthony Daniels, Billy Dee Williams, Ian McDiarmid) the age-old conflict between the Jedi and the Sith arrives at its turning point – and the final battle for the galaxy begins.
Episode 9 concludes the Skywalker saga and lays the groundwork to expand the Star Wars universe in upcoming projects films and television series. Rian Johnson will write and shepherd a new trilogy of films, while a Rogue One prequel series focusing on mercenary Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) and a series about young Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) eight years after the events of Revenge of the Sith, will stream on Disney+.
Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker opens in theatres today.
