Once Boxing Day is over, most people are looking to get rid of their trees as soon as possible, so they toss it to the curb.
But what if there was another option?
According to the Nature Conservancy of Canada, your old tree can provide a lovely winter home for birds and other animals.
It is also a relatively simple process, according to spokesperson Andrew Holland.
“After you’re done with the tree in your living room, you can just take it outside, turn it on its side or stand it up and you’re good to go,” said Holland.
Holland also suggests making it a fun family activity.
“You can decorate the tree and, if you want to really help out, stuff the tree with pine cones with peanut butter,” he said.
The pine cones recommendation indicates what this idea is all about: helping birds.
Holland said a recent study found one-third of North America’s bird population has died over the past 50 years.
He said while we do not fully understand what is causing the rapid decline, efforts like this can help.
