He is glad to be back in Ottawa, but more importantly, glad to be on hand to help out his constituents.
New Brunswick Southwest MP John Williamson was elected in the federal election and is now part of the Conservative caucus and the Official Opposition in a minority government.
Williamson says he wants his constituents to know he is accessible to them anytime.
“Get in touch if you need help and I am going to keep working every single day both at home and in parliament to ensure that southwest New Brunswick has a voice in Ottawa, that our issues are tackled. I am going to continue to work closely with the province to advance New Brunswick’s interests,” said Williamson in a year-end interview with our newsroom.
Williamson says a change is needed in Ottawa because Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is hurting Canadians, citing the new NAFTA deal as an example.
“Donald Trump’s concern was with trade with Mexico, not Canada, and unfortunately the U.S. president decided that we just weren’t serious in Canada because of some of the statements that the prime minister made. The deal was agreed upon between Mexico and the United States and we had a choice, take it or leave it,” stated Williamson.
The federal Conservative party will look for a new leader in 2020 after Andrew Scheer announced he was stepping down.
Williamson is excited by some of the big names already looking to enter the race and be contenders.
“There are more names out there, some will enter, the majority will not, but this is a good start when we hear names like Rona Ambrose and Peter MacKay, and even a former Liberal premier and one-time Progressive Conservative leader like Jean Charest is kicking the tires,” said Williamson.
