Saint John police are reminding those who plan on celebrating on New Year’s Eve to do so safely.
Spokesperson Jim Hennessey says if you plan on having a few drinks or consuming cannabis, plan to get a ride home.
He suggests either having a designated driver, booking a taxi ahead of time, or staying the night if you can.
Hennessey also says to watch your alcohol intake, never leave your drink unattended, and if you are hosting a party, collect vehicle keys at the door so no one drives impaired.
Police are also reminding drivers that driving high also counts as impaired driving and will result in an arrest.
“The latest stats from the Government of Canada indicates the percentage of Canadian drivers killed in vehicle crashes who test positive for drugs, now exceeds the numbers who test positive for alcohol,” said Hennessey in a news release.
“One drink, one joint or one edible is too many and not worth the risk of taking a life, risking your own or facing jail time, hefty fines and other consequences.”
Police will be out in various parts of the city starting early Tuesday evening to check for impaired driving.
