The 77th Golden Globes, led by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) marked the beginning of awards season, which took place at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles.
This year’s awards season is more intense than other years due to the Academy Awards being held earlier than normal on February 9, 2020.
Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood lead the film categories with three wins. 1917, Joker and Rocketman followed with two wins apiece. In the television categories the awards were more spread out, with Succession, Fleabag and Chernobyl each winning two awards.
Tom Hanks was the sixty-seventh recipient of the Cecil B. DeMille Award and Ellen De Generes was the second recipient of Carol Burnett Award. Actor Pierce Brosnan’s sons Dylan and Paris Brosnan, served as the Golden Globe Ambassadors.
Host Ricky Gervais had no qualms steamrolling the Hollywood establishment in a nihilistic, sarcastic monologue and burns throughout his fifth time hosting the Golden Globes.
The British actor-comic pulled no punches, referencing investigative journalist Ronan Farrow’s investigations of media conglomerate coverups and deceased convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, who along with being a confident of Prince Andrew, rubbed elbows with of the entertainment industry elites.
Entertainment history was also made at the awards ceremony. Actress Awkwafina’s win made her the first Asian-American woman to win in a Best Actress film category at the Golden Globes, while Icelandic composer Hildur Guðnadóttir’s became the first woman to win a Golden Globe for Best Score.
