If you love hockey, live in Grand Bay-Westfield and would like to see the NHL play in your area, you need to check this out.
Resident Brittany Merrifield has nominated the River Valley Community Centre for Kraft Hockeyville 2020.
“Being on the river, ice is kind of in our blood and that, of course, translates to hockey in town. If you don’t know someone in hockey, then it’s very odd. The building is important in the community, not just for hockey but for other recreational things as well, so we decided to go for it,” said Merrifield.
Among the prizes for Kraft Hockeyville is $250,000 for arena upgrades and the chance to host an NHL game in your area.
Merrifield says the Town’s River Valley Community Centre could really benefit from some TLC.
“It needs a little bit of renovations, it needs an upgrade in terms of its equipment. I feel like our town has the drive to make this happen. We get together when the going is tough and even when the going is good so I think we have a really good shot at it,” she said.
As for the NHL Pre-season game, Merrfield says that’s a draw for the entire region.
“Not only would it be something that would rally the town together, it would give us an opportunity to show off our town, what we are like and what we do. All the businesses in the area would benefit,” she said.
You can check out Grand Bay-Westfield’s nomination online, and even add your own photos and videos to boost the town’s chances.
Nominations close on February 9th and the top four communities will be announced on March 14th.
Voting will then take place on March 27th and 28th, with the winner being announced later that evening.
