It is a great idea that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have decided to live part-time in Canada, but don’t expect taxpayers to pick up the tab, according to the Canadian Taxpayers Federation.
Federal director Aaron Wudrick says that is the one big issue they have with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex coming to stay part-time. He says this is not like a Royal visit where they drop in for a week or so.
“We are in uncharted waters. I think a lot of Canadians feel that if they are going to be here and not serving in an official role like the governor general, for example, Canadians should not be on the hook for paying their bills,” stated Wudrick.
Security is going to become a major issue and a bone of contention for Canadians, said Wudrick.
“Having Royals visit is much different than moving, so I just think a lot of Canadians think that if they are going to spend all or half of the year here, for example, they should be responsible for paying the costs of their own security,” he said.
It’s estimated the cost of covering security for Harry and Meghan would be in the range of $10 million per year.
