A St. George, N.B. business owner who rescued the Milltown Irving from closure last fall plans to do the same in Campobello Island.
Greg Hooper of Uncle Mayn’s convenience store plans to make an offer on the Village Mart in Campobello Island slated for closure in March.
Hooper says some people from the island asked him if he may be interested in buying the store.
“I’m always interested in an opportunity if I can make it work so, I drove over. I had a look at the books and the store, it’s a beautiful store,” Hooper said.
Hooper says they can give the store a bit of a facelift, add food service and more groceries.
He would also like to add gas tanks to the store, something the island doesn’t have right now.
“We are looking at above-ground tanks and supplying diesel, high test and regular fuel for the island. It’s not written in stone by no means but, it’s something we are looking into,” Hooper said.
Hooper says he plans to sign a letter of intent this week and potentially have the store open by late March.
“We are going to be talking to suppliers, to government officials about issues like the bond issue and better ferry service,” Hooper said.
He says Campobello Island is a beautiful place and its residents and visitors deserve to have more access to it.
Last fall, Hooper was able to strike a deal with Irving Oil to keep the Milltown Irving open.
