A 43-year-old Saint John man sentenced to more than three years in federal prison after a daylight assault last summer that left a man unconscious and bleeding in the middle of the street.
Michael Price was initially charged with attempted murder but, that charge was withdrawn during sentencing on Tuesday.
The assault occurred around 4 p.m. on Carmarthen Street on August 1st, 2019 where Price punched 67-year-old Jan Beaman at least five times in the head.
Beaman is the father of Price’s on-again, off-again girlfriend.
A good samaritan who intervened that day was also punched in the head by Price who then immediately returned to beating Beaman.
Price and Beaman were intoxicated at the time and Price was also under a no-contact order to stay away from Beaman.
The victim suffered injuries and spent several days in hospital.
Judge Marco Cloutier says the fact that Price pleaded guilty to all charges was a mitigating factor but, his long criminal record was an aggravating factor.
He also noted that Price has a “propensity for violence” and that these attacks were “unprovoked”.
Cloutier encouraged Price to get help with his anger issues while in prison.
Michael Price was also banned from owning firearms for ten years and must submit a DNA sample as part of his sentence.
