Four kids and a dog are safe after falling through the ice on the Saint John River Monday afternoon.
Saint John police say the incident happened just after 3 p.m. off Westfield Road.
The dog and children were 200 feet from shore when they fell through the ice.
Officers say the children managed to pull themselves out but fell back in several times trying to rescue the dog.
The Saint John Fire Department’s Water Rescue Team was called in to help and were able to save the dog.
The children were examined by paramedics and, other than being cold and frightened, suffered no injuries.
Police say fluctuating temperatures in recent days means the ice may not be safe to be out on and ask that people be careful.
