The Higgs government is expected to make a major health care announcement Tuesday surrounding the overnight closure of six emergency rooms provincewide.
The Sussex Health Centre is expected to be one of them and that has the former MP for Fundy Royal concerned.
Alaina Lockhart says up to 35,000 people depend on the health centre in the Sussex area.
“I strongly believe that if we are going to have a strong and prosperous New Brunswick that will have to include rural areas and health care services are a big part of that,” said Lockhart.
Lockhart says the overnight ER closure will mean trips to the cities for residents and she notes how the urban hospitals are certainly not empty.
She’s also worried about possible job impacts at the small hospitals.
Sackville, Ste-Anne-de-Kent, Grand Falls, Caraquet and Perth-Andover are the other communities also expected to be affected.
