There will be fewer and fewer greyhounds coming into Canada, with a ban on racing officially taking effect in Florida at the end of the year.
The Founder of the Maritime Greyhound Adoption Program says the track they deal with in Florida is closing at the end of March.
Deb Levasseur says if you are looking to adopt a greyhounds from MGAP , you’ll want to act fast.
“If anyone is looking to adopt a greyhound into their family, the best time to do that would be in March or April this year. After that point, it is going to be very hard,” Levasseur says.
She says they plan to bring a load of dogs to Canada in early March, and after that she expects there will be an influx of dogs when the track closes.
Levasseur hopes they’ll be able to bring another couple of loads of greyhounds in April.
She adds they are currently looked for forever homes and fosters for the dogs coming over the next couple of months.
“There’s only around six states that have greyhound racing at this point and some of theme are making a shift.(to ban racing) None of them are really close to Eastern Canada though,” Levasseur says.
MGAP has found forever homes for over 1200 greyhounds in the Maritimes and Quebec since they launched 16 years ago.
Levasseur says, once greyhound racing ends, they’ll turn their focus to the rehoming of other breeds.
The law in the Sunshine State that would see greyhound racing banned as of the end of 2020, was passed last year.
