You might say Bobby’s Hospice was lucky the third time around when it comes to receiving money from the 100 Women Who Care of Greater Saint John.
After presenting for the third time Tuesday night, the women on hand voted for the west side hospice to get a cheque for $24,900.
Bobby’s Hospice CEO Sandy Maxwell says they must raise $1.5 million a year to pay their bills.
“It costs about $25,000 for the food to feed our patients, so this would be a wonderful fit with that,” Maxwell said.
In her pitch, Maxwell told emotional stories about the patients they care for, including a 54-year-old woman named Karen with a terminal diagnosis who wanted to help out with fundraising for the hospice.
Maxwell says Karen felt like her life was stolen from her.
“Suddenly going from being strong and independent to being 100 per cent dependent on other people and feeling so vulnerable,” Maxwell said.
According to Maxwell, Karen said people don’t understand how you feel safe when you come to hospice.
“Her wife was pregnant and she wanted to live to see that baby born. That baby was born a few weeks before she died. She just died last week and her funeral was on Saturday,” Maxwell said.
Maxwell says over the decade since Bobby’s Hospice opened, they have cared for over 1,000 patients.
Since June of 2013, the 100 Women Who Care have donated $654,409 to 28 local charities. They will meet again on June 2.
