Victoria LeBlanc finished her last Atlantic University Sport track and field championship in the record books.
LeBlanc won the women’s triple jump on Feb. 21 and set a new AUS record of 12.01 metres.
But LeBlanc, who plays for the University of New Brunswick, said the record almost did not happen.
“Leading up to it, I didn’t have the jumps that I wanted and I didn’t actually get the record until my last jump,” said LeBlanc. “I was kind of freaking out inside.”
The Quispamsis native broke the record at the new Irving Oil Field House in Saint John.
It was the first time the AUS championships were held outside of Moncton in nearly 40 years.
“Having it here was just awesome,” said LeBlanc. “I had many friends that were able to come and watch … and my family was able to come and watch, too.”
LeBlanc will now head to the U SPORTS national track and field championships in Edmonton, Alta., later this week.
She has high expectations leading into the three-day event, which begins on Thursday.
“I’m ranked 13th in long jump right now but my goal is to finish in the top eight and score points. For triple jump, my goal is to finish in the top five, but hopefully, I can bring home a medal,” said LeBlanc.
LeBlanc auto-qualified for this year’s championship early in the season, meaning she recorded a jump that was past a standard set by U SPORTS.
