The Trudeau government is committing $1 billion to battle the coronavirus.
The prime minister explains the money will be divided into research and to helping the provinces prepare and deal with the COVID-19 virus.
Justin Trudeau says he fund includes $500 million to the provinces and $200 million towards the ongoing federal response to the virus.
“Including more money for things like surgical masks and face shields, increased capacity for services to Indigenous people and other federal health care responsibilities, and for continued public education efforts to Canadians,” said Trudeau.
The Liberals will also be investing a total $275 million for coronavirus research.
Health Minister Patty Hajdu notes the government already announced almost $30 million for research.
“But I will say we had a volume of calls … from researchers across the country that were also excellent proposals,” said Hajdu.
“Amplifying our ability to fund those proposals at this time allows us to much more quickly generate the research that we need to understand … how we can better contain the illness … and develop a vaccine.”
