This year’s Great Food Bank Challenge did even better than last.
The Great Food Bank Challenge is when schools and classrooms compete to collect the most non-perishable food items, intended to help with the shortages food banks typically face in February.
Becky MacKay, community school coordinator, said the number of items was a significant donation.
“It went super well, it surpassed our goal. We had a goal of 20,000 food items and we went about a thousand over that,” said MacKay.
“I think our final number was 21,015 items of food so it was super, super successful.”
MacKay said despite it being the first year Chris Saunders Memorial Elementary School competed, it averaged 21 items per student to last year’s winners’ total of 12.
“They really did enjoy the challenge, I think that they had a real feeling of helping the company, and it was a real positive for sure this year,”
MacKay said they calculated the worth of the food items to be roughly $35,000.
The challenge ran for the month of February and this year included all six elementary schools in the Quispamsis/Rothesay area.
