New Brunswick is taking steps to protect the most vulnerable segment of the population from the coronavirus.
Public health wants to keep the virus out of nursing homes, seniors residences and other places where the vulnerable may gather.
As a result, chief medical health officer Dr. Jennifer Russell has unveiled new restrictions.
“Visitors who have travelled outside the country in the last 14 days are restricted from entering long-term care homes. This restriction also applies to those visitors who have travelled outside the country in the last 14 days from entering hospitals to visit those most at-risk for severe illness.”
The measures apply only to visitors and not health care professionals who work in those facilities – unless they have visited Iran, Italy or Hubei province in China.
Visitors with respiratory infections are also urged to avoid visiting nursing homes or long-term care facilities.
Dr. Russell recommends staying in touch with residents by phone, texting, email or through social media.
She continues to emphasize that frequent hand washing, covering your coughs and staying home if you’re sick are the best defences.
