Nova Scotia RCMP have released a detailed timeline on the Portapique mass shooting that took place last weekend.
Supt. Darren Campbell of the Nova Scotia RCMP detailed a 13-hour span of multiple deaths, structure and car fires, and police evasion by the suspect.
Campbell says the incident began when the gunman assaulted his then girlfriend, who later escaped and hid throughout the night.
“It was only after 6:30 in the morning, or daybreak, when a victim emerged from hiding. It was at that time, through that significant key witness, we confirmed more details about (the shooter).”
That information included the photo of the gunman’s car, as well as what he was wearing and the type of weapons, he had access to.
Campbell says while police believed they had the suspect trapped within the perimeter, they now have information of a vehicle driving through a field to leave the area, which they assume was the suspect.
However, he says this is not known for sure.
Campbell says the gunman’s rampage continued throughout the Portapique area, before he moved towards Wentworth Sunday morning where he killed a passerby walking down the road, as well as pulled over a vehicle and shot the occupants.
He also detailed an incident on Sunday, where Const. Heidi Stevenson and Const. Chad Morrison had radioed plans to meet up while on shift.
Campbell says while waiting for Stevenson, Morrison reported he saw a marked RCMP car pulled up, who he assumed was Stevenson, which then opened fire on him.
While they are unsure how the gunman found Morrison, Campbell says police are positive the gunman did not have access to a police radio.
He then later shot and killed Stevenson, who’d collided with his replica police vehicle, a passerby at the scene and a woman at a nearby home before being fatally shot by police at a gas station in Enfield.
