A quick-thinking Saint John police officer is being commended for helping to save a newborn baby.
In a news release, police said officers responding to an east side home around 1 a.m. Friday found a baby who was not breathing or making any sounds.
Acting Sgt. Sylvia Summerville assessed the situation and jumped into action, using a shoelace to tie off the umbilical cord.
Summerville laid the baby on her forearm, cupped the face with her hand and gave several thrusts to the back.
She then massaged the lips and chest until the baby began breathing and its colour returned to normal.
Paramedics assessed both the baby and mother and took them to the Saint John Regional Hospital.
“By utilizing her training, Acting Sergeant Summerville is to be congratulated for her actions,” said Chief Stephan Drolet in the release.
“All officers with the SJPF look to make a difference during their shifts and this instance is certainly one of those times.”
