Churches in Grand Bay-Westfield are coming together to shine a light on graduates who won’t get to cross the stage due to COVID-19.
While graduation ceremonies and all crowded get-togethers are banned due to physical distancing restrictions, people have had to be creative to find a way to celebrate graduates.
Local churches in the town have teamed up to create banners honouring the area’s graduating class.
“The community wants to try to make things up to these grads, just understanding all the things they’re missing out on,” said Sue Pitman, a member of Grand Bay Baptist Church.
Parents can submit a photo of their child and a name to the churches, and banners will be printed by Three Ladies Crafting in Saint John.
Pitman says the loss of graduation ceremonies can be very disappointing for the families of graduating students.
“Graduation’s such a hard time for families and students,” she said. “We’re hopeful we can make it up to them in some way.”
The one thing that has really shone during this time for Pitman, is the way area churches have come together to help out.
“I’m really proud of the churches in Grand Bay, they always put aside their differences and beliefs to come together for the community.”
Parents have until May 29 to send in their photo, name and school to the program’s e-mail.
