Concerns over safety amid COVID-19 have been devastating for the global travel industry.
It includes the cruise ship season for 2020 which last year brought 274,000 visitors on 79 ships to Port Saint John.
40 cruise ships have cancelled visits so far with more expected.
Given how many tourist operators and small businesses rely on the cruise ship season, Port Saint John CEO Jim Quinn encouraged people to support New Brunswick businesses during their “staycations” this year.
“Look to go for one of the adventures that our available in our region and throughout our province. Grab a bite at one our restaurants that are beginning to open up. Take advantage of their delivery service.” Quinn said.
Quinn said Port Saint John is closely monitoring the shift to a recovery phase and will implement the advice of relevant government authorities for all port operations.
“Everyone in the cruise industry including our partners at the cruise lines recognize that its important for the cruise industry to resume only when safety factors are addressed,” Quinn said.
Port Saint John held their annual general meeting virtually on Thursday morning.
