Police Issue Reminders About Tinted Windows

The Saint John Police Force is reminding drivers about the rules surrounding tinted windows.

In a news release, police say they have seen an increasing number of vehicles with darkened windows.

While the practice is not illegal in New Brunswick, the windshield and windows to the left and right of the driver must not block more than 30 per cent of light, according to the province’s Motor Vehicle Act.

“Education is the key to ensuring motorists understand what is and isn’t acceptable for a motor vehicle in New Brunswick,” said Sgt. Mike McCaig, who head the force’s traffic division.

Police say dark tinted windows can block the driver’s vision and prevent officers from clearly seeing who is in the vehicle.

The fine for illegally tinted windows is $172.50, the vehicle could be towed and need to be re-inspected, and the driver may lose their licence.

“Officers do not want to hand out tickets but need to ensure that driver safety is being adhered to at all times,” said McCaig.
