As we deal with the stresses caused by COVID-19, taking care of our bodies may not always be top of mind.
But it should be something we focus on, according to Gillian Salmon, a registered dietitian with Horizon Health Network.
“Making healthy choices and focusing on your nutritional health, those are things that are going to help you stay healthy during this pandemic,” said Salmon. It’s going to help your body work its best, do its best.”
Salmon said half the battle is keeping healthier food, including snacks, on hand.
“As easy as it is to grab a can of pop or a chocolate bar, if you don’t have those things in your house and haven’t bought them already, it’s a lot harder to grab them,” she said.
Salmon said she keeps a lot of frozen fruits and vegetables on hand because they are easy to prepare and keep longer.
“Those things keep, which is great, so you can buy them when you see them in the store and you don’t have to necessarily worry about running out before you get to the grocery store the next time,” she said.
Salmon said a lot of us tend to turn to comfort foods during this time, which is not a bad thing.
But she said it is important to eat them mindfully, adding that moderation is key.
