With the COVID-19 curve flattened in PEI and NB, Premier Blaine Higgs says there have been discussions about opening the border between the two provinces, but he adds there has been no firm decision on that yet.
“We’ll continue to work with the Island and the Public Health officials in both provinces to determine the next phase of our alignment going forward,” Higgs says.
PEI Premier Dennis King recently announced seasonal homeowners from out of province will be able to come to the Island, starting on June 1st.
Higgs says even with closed borders, they will be permitted to travel through New Brunswick.
“We have from the beginning allowed people to come through New Brunswick to get to other provinces. I think that is an obligation we have that we would agree with, so that will continue,” Higgs says. “We should be able to ensure when they come to our borders that they have a reason for coming. I understand PEI is going to have a strong and solid application process that residents are well understood. I would assume they would share that with us, so we can share it with our officials at the border and we can get continued compliance throughout the province.”
