Out-Of-Control Fire Destroys Three Camps

New Brunswick remains under a province-wide burn ban as we prepare for soaring temperatures over the coming days.

Crews are monitoring more than a dozen fires, including a monstrous out-of-control blaze southeast of Blackville.

Roger Collet, the province’s wildfire prevention officer, said the blaze has grown to around 350 hectares since it began Monday.

Collett said three unoccupied camp structures have been destroyed, but no homes or communities are currently in danger.

“There is a fair amount of smoke drifting into those communities that are several kilometres away, probably 15 kilometres away or so,” Collett said Tuesday morning.

Six air tankers from New Brunswick and two from Quebec are battling the fire, along with around 25 firefighters on the ground, he said.

Collett said it will be a few more days before the stubborn blaze is brought under control.

Crews have dealt with around 200 fires since early April, including more than 70 in the past week or so.
