Canadians are being encouraged to take a break from mowing their lawns this month.
Andrew Holland with the Nature Conservancy of Canada says “No Mow May” is a campaign to help local pollinators.
“Longer lawns can give a much-needed boost to native flowering plants, which are scarcer in our cities,” he says.
He adds this simple act can increase bee populations by as much as 10 times.
Holland says the campaign stems from the “Every Flower Counts” campaign in the United Kingdom.
He says studies done in the UK showed it could provide bees with as much as 23 kilograms of nectar per day, enough nectar to help 2.1 million honeybees, or 60,000 hives.
