Measures for cruise ship operations during the pandemic have been updated.
Cruise ships with more than 100 people and overnight accommodations are prohibited from operating in Canadian waters until the end of October.
Marc Garneau, Minister of Transport, said they knew some parts of the transportation sector would be affected more than others, but precautions are necessary.
“Our Government is committed to protecting Canadians, particularly during these challenging times. It is for that reason I am announcing updated measures for cruise ships and other passenger vessels in Canada, which includes prohibiting larger cruise ships from operating in Canadian waters until October 31, 2020,” he said.
Passenger vessels with the capacity of 12 persons are prohibited from entering Arctic coastal waters until the end of October.
As well, beginning in July, passenger vessels can operate in inland rivers and lakes in the Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon.
Garneau said it is a priority to keep the transportation system safe and secure.
“We’ve made encouraging progress, however we have not yet won the battle.”
