The Foundation for the New Brunswick Museum has named its new executive director.
John McAvity is no stranger to the museum — it is where he started his career as a provincial outreach officer.
“We are pleased that someone with such excellent credentials has chosen to work with us,” said Wayne Burley, board chair of the museum foundation.
“Over the past several years, the strengths of the New Brunswick Museum have grown thanks to strong leadership in all aspects of operations, membership, collections, research, conservation and archives.”
McAvity served as executive director of the Ontario Museum Association before spending 38 years as CEO of the Canadian Museums Association.
The Saint John native also received the Order of Canada in 2016 for his contributions to preserving Canada’s cultural heritage.
McAvity said said he is excited by the opportunities to help Canada’s oldest museum.
“The New Brunswick Museum is an important place for New Brunswickers and visitors alike to experience our treasures and hear our stories. We aim to bring New Brunswick to the world and the world to New Brunswick,” he said.
