The city has earmarked $285,000 in funds for the Dominion Park revitalization efforts.
The new money has not been committed to specific projects yet, but ideas like a new boat launch, revitalized park, and a replacement for the recently torn-down canteen are all on the table.
City councillor Greg Norton credits the work of the Dominion Park Community Association for organizing support and advocating for the space.
“When the park has taken a backseat in terms of priorities at a government-level, the community has always been there to raise the flag that it’s a priority,” Norton said.
From beach clean-ups to advocating for fundraising support, Norton says the association has continued to grow and improve its messaging and organization efforts.
Up to $150,000 of the funding will come from insurance claims after flooding in 2018 and 2019.
Norton says it’s important to take care of the parks which represent hubs or attractions for people from across the city.
“Dominion Park is one of those district parks that provides a destination to folks not just on the west side.”
