More response to Premier Blaine Higgs’ decision not to have an independent inquiry into the issue of government systemic racism against Indigenous people.
This comes after the recent police shootings of Chantel Moore and Rodney Levi.
Fifteen First Nations Chiefs in New Brunswick met with Premier Blaine Higgs.
Chief Tim Paul of Wotstak says an independent inquiry must be indigenous led and have tight timelines to ensure prompt action.
He says Higgs preferred a lesser option with a task force that merely reviews old reports and recommendations.
Paul says that is not prompt action, and that is not good enough.
He adds that the past two weeks have been very difficult for the first nations people in New Brunswick and a fully independent inquiry, with Indigenous leadership and a quick reporting timeline is what is needed to restore trust and fix the broken system of justice.
