Nova Scotia’s largest newspaper publisher has notified more than 100 staff that their temporary layoffs are now permanent.
Saltwire Network cites the ‘devastating impact of COVID-19 on advertising’ for the move.
Staff were notified on Tuesday.
Nearly half were laid off immediately.
Of the 109 permanent layoffs, 61 are in Nova Scotia.
The cuts reportedly affect employees from all areas of the business.
SaltWire announced ‘temporary changes’ at the end of March that included laying off 40% of their workforce.
All weekly publications in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland – including The Vanguard and the South Shore Breaker – were suspended for 12 weeks at that time.
