The trucking industry in the region is looking for recruits.
Jean-Marc Picard, executive director of the Atlantic Provinces Trucking Association, said they have struggled to recruit younger drivers over the last decade and part of that is due to old perceptions about the industry.
“We are trying to change that, trying to create some awareness about what the industry is, what the roles are. Trucks have changed. You are still driving but companies realize that drivers are their biggest asset,” Picard said.
He said there are limits on the length of time drivers are allowed to work in Canada.
“You can be on duty in Canada for 14 hours. This has to include breaks and some rest time. You need to work around those hours to get where you are going.”
Picard said truckers kept working during the pandemic but mainly those working to keep the supply going in the food industry.
