A rally was held at Saint John City Hall on the weekend to call attention to Israel’s plan to annex parts of the occupied West Bank.
Helmi Alfarra, the organizer of the rally, said about 30 people showed up, with others showing support by honking their horns as they went by.
Alfarra said they want the Canadian government to condemn the annexation and take action against Israel.
Israel occupied the West Bank in 1967, considered by the United Nations to be in breach of international declarations. Specifically, the occupation violated Article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention.
The Palestinians assert rights to the area but Israel claims international law enshrines its rights to the lands in question.
Alfarra said at one point, two Indigenous women attended in support and compared the situation to how their people were moved to reserves.
He said quite a bit has been done now, but the hope is that more people learn about Palestine and the conditions faced by its residents.
