Moosehead Breweries announced Monday that it will stop all paid advertising on Facebook and Instagram for the month of July as part of the #StopHateforProfit campaign.
The campaign was launched in the United States by six leading human rights organizations – ADL (the Anti-Defamation League), the NAACP, Sleeping Giants, Color Of Change, Free Press and Common Sense – in response to a demonstrated failure by Facebook, which also owns Instagram, to effectively address hate speech on the platform.
The growing list of companies participating in the boycott includes Best Buy, Coca-Cola, Eddie Bauer, Ford, Honda, Levi’s, Lululemon, Reebok, Verizon, among many others.
“As a brewer, we talk a lot about the Canadian values that define us: boldness, independence, strength of character, but also openness, inclusivity and warmth,” said Trevor Grant, vice-president of marketing and sales of Moosehead Breweries, in a news release. “More needs to be done to protect those values on the world’s biggest social platforms, and to end hate speech online, and we stand in support of this much-needed change.”
All of Moosehead’s brands including Cracked Canoe, Moosehead Light, Alpine Lager and Hop City, will be participating in the boycott.
