Long lineups at the New Brunswick border in Aulac are having a huge impact on truck drivers, according to the Atlantic Provinces Trucking Association.
Executive director Jean-Marc Picard says some truckers have waited up to three hours since the travel bubble opened a week ago.
Being an essential service, Picard says trucks should have a dedicated lane apart from vehicles.
“All they did so far is if the lineup wait time is for 60 minutes, they are starting to push traffic through without checking them. So this is not really a solution. As far as we’re concerned we need a better plan going forward,” he says.
Picard says drivers are feeling the pinch in their hours of service, some are even running out of fuel and he notes how some companies charge for late deliveries.
Time is money and Picard says companies from Ontario and Quebec have been calling about loads which have been delayed.
He wishes the province had consulted the industry before opening the travel bubble because he feels this wasn’t a very well thought out plan.
