The New Brunswick government wants to pay you to staycation in the province this summer.
Officials launched a new rebate program Wednesday to stimulate the tourism industry in light of COVID-19.
New Brunswickers who take a vacation which includes a paid overnight stay can apply for a 20 per cent rebate on accommodation, food and drink, activity and travel expenses.
“This rebate will not only encourage New Brunswickers to travel and discover the natural beauty and diversity of our province but to also support our industries during a period of time they need it the most,” said Tourism Minister Bruce Fitch in a statement.
A news release from the province broke down the four categories and eligible expenses:
- accommodations (such as hotels, motels, inns, B&Bs and campsites);
- food and drink (such as restaurants and food trucks);
- activities (such as entrance fees to attractions, museums, art galleries, cultural events and outdoor adventure activities); and
- travel (such as vehicle rentals, ferries and parking).
The rebate applies to eligible expenses of up to $1,000 between July 15 and Sept. 30. You must be a permanent resident of New Brunswick, have valid and detailed receipts from registered provincial businesses, and have a paid overnight stay at a New Brunswick accommodation.
Carol Alderdice, president and CEO of the Tourism Industry Association of New Brunswick, applauded the government for the rebate program.
“It will benefit our tourism operators and other economic sectors by encouraging New Brunswickers to travel more and spend time in their province this summer,” said Alderdice in a statement.
The initiative was developed by the Tourism Labour Force Adjustment Committee, which is composed of industry representatives from various sectors, including the tourism association.
Applications for the Explore NB Travel Incentive Program will be available online and must be submitted between Oct. 1 to 30.
According to the province, applications will be reviewed on a first come first served basis until the $3 million fund is used up.
You can find more details about the program on the provincial government’s website.
