A mental health support group is looking for a space to hold its meetings.
Melissa Morgan, a Saint John resident, said the group, Stronger Together, started with a visit to the ER on July 1st.
“It took them five hours for them to get me an Ativan to calm down and then a doctor approached me and then they basically sent me away with sleeping pills after a five-hour wait of sitting in there,” she said.
Morgan said she has her down days which is why she wanted to start a group so people can have a buddy system.
After seeing a healthcare worker, she told them she needed more, and it was suggested to her that she start a mental health support group herself.
“I’m really disappointed in them, I have been struggling for a really long time and I’ve had multiple suicide attempts, I’ve been in the ER, I’ve been admitted even to the 4D North, I think is the what the ward is in the Regional Hospital,” she said.
Morgan said we need to educate ourselves on mental health and talk about it because people are struggling and they need places to lean on and go to.
“I feel like I need to do it myself because nobody else is stepping up to do it, nobody in this profession is actually taking the reins and making a difference or doing it on their own or stepping out of their comfort zone just to make other people comfortable and I’m ready to do it if nobody else is,” she said.
This week’s meeting will take place at 6 Market Street in Quispamsis at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
