The Atlantic travel bubble launched on July 3 and given the number of vehicles streaming into New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island lately, the Chamber of Commerce for Greater Moncton believes it will be good for the economy of all three provinces.
Premier Blaine Higgs is now considering expanding the bubble to add regions in Quebec near the provincial border including the Gaspé.
Chamber CEO John Wishart hopes the travel bubble will help salvage the summer, especially for seasonal businesses.
“The hotel parking lots seem to be a little more full than they were. I’m sure the shopping malls, the retailers, the restaurants are starting to see it as well… you see it on patios,” he notes.
Wishart thinks the bubble came along at just the right time.
Earlier this month, Premier Higgs had indicated the bubble could possibly expand to the rest of Canada on July 17.
However, a statement from the premier’s office today indicates it won’t happen that soon.
“I have some apprehension right now about opening up the Atlantic region to the rest of the country. I believe my fellow Atlantic premiers share those concerns, and we will be discussing the matter in the coming days,” said Higgs.
