A Hampton resident is in the process of starting a non-profit by cleaning up garbage.
Pete Nickerson has been cleaning up garbage on the sides of roads for a few months now.
“I was putting my posts online, and instead of asking for likes, what I was asking was suggestions for donations towards the SPCA and it seemed to go over really well, people were liking that it was different news, it was good news,” he said.
Nickerson said he tries to think where he would play if he was a kid, and gathers garbage there.
“I look and that’s the same place that for some reason people like to put garbage, broken glass, cigarette butts, all these things that are the last thing you would ever want anywhere near where the kids are running in bare feet so then I post that,” he said.
“Then I’ve been getting grandparents and stuff like that that are just loving this, that there’s some guy out there who’s looking out for their grand-kids’ feet.”
He said he’s in the process of creating a non-profit or charity so he can donate the proceeds elsewhere. The non-profit would be called “The Humble Bandits” and he’s called the Masked Bandit, because of his distinctive masked pictures.
“What I have collected in recyclables, I’ve actually put towards things in the town for the kids. I’ve replaced a basketball net not the backboard, but the netting with my first trip because I only got four or five bucks, you don’t get much for recyclables,” he said.
Nickerson said in the meantime, he’s been asking people to make donations on his behalf to the SPCA at least until his non-profit is up and running.
