The doubling of fines in construction zones is not working to deter speeding on provincial highways.
Video released by the province shows a car nearly hitting construction workers on Route 1 in Saint John and almost causing a collision.
The provincial government urged caution noting many near-misses that could have been deadly.
Tom McGinn of the New Brunswick Road Builders and Heavy Construction Association said this is nothing new noting several incidents like this in recent weeks.
“It’s all just exactly what is in that video, driver not wanting to slow down and seems to be in a big rush to get wherever they are going. It’s always been a big issue and a big concern,” McGinn said.
There have been a number of recent near misses between highway workers and vehicles in recent weeks which could have easily resulted in a fatality. Motorists are reminded to slow down and observe posted speed limits in and around work zones.

McGinn agrees doubling fines in construction zones is not working as a deterrent for speeding.
“We’ve had discussions with the Department of Transportation about possibly partnering with the Department of Public Safety and the RCMP to get out and do some enforcement,” McGinn said.
McGinn said somehow it seems to be worse this summer despite a lot less traffic on the roadways given the border closures and travel restrictions because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
