An uptown Saint John consignment shop is expanding for the second time in less than a year.
Carey Morris first opened My City Life in a 300-sq.-ft. storefront on Princess Street in September 2019.
After quickly outgrowing the space, the store moved into a much larger shop in Brunswick Square in February.
Six months later, Morris is opening a second location in McAllister Place on the city’s east side.
Mike Melvin, the buyer for My City Life, said growing demand is the main reason why they decided to expand.
“The things that people are asking for, we just can’t fit in this little space. We have 2,400-sq.-ft. and you’d think we’d be able to fit it all in, but as you can see for those who have come in here, we’re quite full,” said Melvin.
My City Life moved into its Brunswick Square location just weeks before COVID-19 forced malls and other businesses to close.
Melvin said the mall is not seeing the traffic it did before the pandemic, but their store is still alive and doing well.
He said they have been hearing a lot of positive feedback from customers who have come through their doors.
“Everyone loves it. We hear on a regular basis there’s a reason to go back uptown. Some people who have come here said ‘I haven’t been uptown in 20 years.’ We love hearing that,” said Melvin.
Melvin said he thinks the foot traffic at McAllister Place will drive the business and help them grow even more.
In fact, a third location and an online auction house are being planned for the coming months, and Melvin said they are even looking opening locations in other New Brunswick communities.
“We’re getting so many people calling us and wanting to sell us estate sales and downsizings and antiques that they’ve had in the family for years but the kids don’t want them or the kids have all moved away to other provinces,” he said.
“In order for us to properly display those and house them, why pay for warehouse space when we can have another store and simply sell them.”
With items constantly coming and going, Melvin said you will find something different each time you visit one of their locations.
“As things are being taken away, we have to fill those spots, so we simply move the store around, we change everything up on a regular basis,” he said.
“We have a 3,000-sq.-ft. warehouse full, we have two storage containers full, and we even have a storage container in Moncton full,” he said.
Six more people have been hired for the new location and there are plans to hire four more in the coming weeks, said Melvin.
The new location in McAllister Place will open Saturday, Aug. 1, in the former La Senza space.
